A Vision Come True for Hexagon Green Founders

Hexagon Green Sdn Bhd has come to be known as a major player in the orchid growing industry.  The company is the brainchild of a couple well versed in horticultural matters.  They are Dr. Md Yusof Husin and Dr. Norani Tan Sri Samad who are renowned academics and researchers in their respective fields.

The two originally met when they were classmates in college, both studying agriculture.  They later went to the United States to further their studies at Louisiana State University (LSU). While still enrolled and studying in the U.S. they were recruited by their original university in a teaching capacity.

By this time married and with one child, they later (1978) went to Australia to carry on with their PhD.  While there, Dr. Norani studied Plant Virology and orchids.  In the meantime, Dr. Yusof dealt with Pest Management.  Not surprisingly, being Malaysian, they had a love for orchids which began at home.

Later, in 2004, after her retirement from Professor at UPM, she decided to go into producing orchids by way of tissue culture.  Understandable, given that she had done research at the same time when Molecular technology pertaining to plant preparation had begun.  She was also assisted by her brother, who put up the seed money that was needed to get things under way.

While there are indeed sometimes daunting challenges in the industry, they have never once looked back.  In fact, they have moved from their original shop lot and now operate from a spot at the MINT in a lab specially built for their venture.  Dr. Norani readily admits that they are still learning when it comes to planting procedures.

This is something that no book can teach.  It requires a hands-on learn as you go process.  There are so many variables and possible things that can arise along the way.  But in a smart move, she has frequent meetings with growers in an effort to learn from their personal experiences.  And she has received help in the way of funding from the Malaysian government, which has certainly been helpful in export efforts.

With people like the one behind Hexagon Green, it is widely felt that the country of Malaysia has a bright future ahead when it comes to the flower industry, particularly orchids.  It is a constant learning process, with the inevitable obstacles along the way.  But with this dynamic couple at the helm of Hexagon Green, things are sure to play out just fine.
