Health Benefits of Consuming Pineapples

It is a known fact that pineapple has various health benefits and that canned pineapple gets consumed throughout the world. It gets made from the highest grade skinned and cored fruit. Some of the known healthy benefits of consuming pineapples include:

  • The flesh of the pineapple contains no cholesterol or any saturated fats; however, it proves to be rich source of both soluble and insoluble dietary fiber such as pectin

  • Pineapple fruit also contains the well known enzyme called bromelain that aids digestion as it breaks down protein. In addition, bromelain has anti-clotting, anti-inflammatory as well as anti-cancer properties

  • The consumption of pineapple on a regular basis helps to fight indigestion, arthritis and worm infestation

  • In its fresh state, pineapple serve as an excellent source of vitamin C which is needed for the collagen synthesis of our body that serves to maintain our skin, blood vessels, bones and organs.

  • Amazingly, the pineapple plant is rich in vitamin A which is required to maintain healthy mucus membranes. In addition, the consuming of pineapple fruit that is rich in flavonoids aids the human body in protecting it from oral cavity and lung cancers

  • The fruit is also rich in the B-complex group with vitamins like riboflavin, pyridoxine, thiamine, folates as well as minerals like potassium, manganese and copper where potassium serves as a very important component of both our body fluids and cells

  • As a folk medicine; pineapple juice gets taken to expedite labor and as a diuretic. People would also gargle using pineapple juice in cases of a sore throat or as an antidote against seasickness. They would use the flesh of very young pineapples (toxic) to get rid of intestinal worms or as treatment to any type of venereal disease. The crushed rind would be applied to any fractures whereas the rind decoction together with rosemary would be applied on hemorrhoids

During the grading process they would search for pineapples that are heavy in size. Even though larger pineapples would normally have a larger proportion of edible flesh, there would usually be no difference in terms of quality between a large and a small sized pineapple. In addition, pineapples should be free of any soft spots, or darkened "eyes," of any kind as this would show that the pineapple is past its prime. The minute the pineapple gets picked, it would stop ripening. Therefore, it is suggested you select a pineapple with a fragrant sweet smell at the stem end. Any musty, fermented or sour smelling pineapple should be avoided.

Due to the various healthy benefits of consuming pineapples, the demand for growing more and more has increased substantially. Due to this the order in which the pineapple gets graded would vary. It would be yielded as large crowns, medium-sized suckers, medium-sized crowns and large suckers. Its been reported that both Medium and large suckers would be fruited earlier. In addition, the trimming of basal leaves would serve to increase yields. According to reports larger crowns would give the highest yield, followed by small crowns. To ensure the best yield, the land would need to be very well prepared due to the fact that pineapple is shallow-rooted and gets damaged easily through post-planting cultivation.
